JR InsideOut collab with The ArtFabric : Broken dreams, Sao Paulo

After the 2010 earthquake in Haîti, Brazil opened it's borders to Haitians who had to leave families and friends for survival.

Many migrated to Sao Paulo believing in the Eldorado of the financial capital of Brazil. After sometimes a difficult and risky travel via Panama, Ecuador and Peru, they expected to find some Eldorado in Sao Paulo, financial capital of Brazil.

What they found is an expensive to live city and hard work in construction business paid 2 USD per hour. They gather in Glicerio, invisible to most Paulistans.

Inside Out is a large-scale participatory art project created by french photographer JR, that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world.

The bases of The ArtFabric and Inside/out projects are similar : using the power of Art to raise the visibility of communities struggling to survive. Art not only promotes change and raises awareness, but in many cases generates bubbles of joy.

Eleven artists from Brazil -Cynthia Castejon, Celso Gitahy, Davaca-, Argentina -Cabaio-, UK -Koe1- , Germany -Ebenholz- , Canada -Lily Luciole-, France -NiceArt, NoName Stencil, Arkane and Happy Fingers created their own interpretation of each portrait photographed.

Behind each of these eleven portraits, there is a unique story, but what they all have in common is a feeling of « saudades ».

Their dreams have been broken by a harsh reality.
